This is where it all began
From school residence to Fjällheim
Long before Fjällheim became a hotel, the building was a school residence for children from Idre and the surrounding villages. Distances were long and school transport was not available, so children living further away stayed there during the school week and returned home on Saturdays. The first school residence was built at Berget in 1924. The original structure was later preserved as a local heritage centre and moved to central Idre in 1992. The building that is now Hotell Fjällheim (former Sporthotellet) was built as a school residence in the late 1940s. One of the children who stayed here was Mats Johnson from Lövåsen, who spent twelve school terms at the residence in the late 1950s. He remembers hot chocolate in tin mugs, tea in white cups, and days filled with school, homework, skiing and play. But the stories from those days still live on – in our walls, in the memories, and in the hearts of those who once called it home.
